Anne Spilman Souter, Creative Director at Bassett Furniture, brings a deep-rooted connection to the furniture industry. As the daughter of Bassett President Rob Spilman, and granddaughter of former President Bob Spilman, she fondly recalls the family tradition of attending High Point Market each year. Back then, she was a young girl in tights and patent leather shoes, surrounded by three generations of her family, already immersed in the world of furniture design.
A Family Legacy in American Furniture Design
After building her design career in New York City, Anne’s return to the family business was accelerated by the pandemic, an unexpected but welcome opportunity to come home to Bassett and contribute creatively at Bassett. Today, she leads the brand’s design direction, blending heritage with a fresh, modern perspective.
Inside the Newberry Collection: Timeless Home Furnishings with Modern Appeal
Under her guidance, the Newberry Collection reflects today’s evolving aesthetic. The line combines traditional and contemporary silhouettes with natural materials and softer, curvaceous forms inspired by organic design trends. A custom gesso technique adds texture hinting of woven fabric, paired with white oak, polished nickel, and chevron grass cloth.
“We wanted it to feel versatile and universal,” Anne explains. “Not just coastal, but something that works in any space.” The collection’s warm color palette: mustard, sage, and terracotta, pairs with an updated accessory line, reinforcing its practical and timeless appeal.
Crafted in America: Solid Wood Furniture from Virginia & North Carolina
Bassett remains committed to quality craftsmanship, with many pieces handcrafted in the USA in Bassett, Virginia, and North Carolina. Known for solid wood construction, Bassett Furniture continues to enable customers to delight in quality home furnishings that reflect who they are.
Anne’s return marks not just the continuation of a legacy, but a bold new creative direction for Bassett, respecting the past while shaping the future of this beloved American furniture brand.
