What’s the Ideal Temperature for your Refrigerator? 08/22/08

Question: What’s the ideal temperature for your refrigerator?

Answer: The purpose of your refrigerator is to slow bacterial growth and extend the life of your foods. Freezers, on the other hand, completely stop the growth of bacteria by freezing them solid. Freezing can change the texture and quality of many foods, so it is important to keep your refrigerator cold but not freezing.

The optimal temperature is considered 35-38ºF. Anything lower and your foods may freeze and become unstable. Anything higher and your foods will spoil too quickly.

Tips to Maximize Your Fridge Efficiency

1. Keep the refrigerator organized so you can quickly find what you’re looking for. Standing in front with the door open pondering your selection can zap a good deal of electricity.

2.  Clean dust from beneath and behind the machine. The coils are the workhorse of your fridge and dust and dirt can impact their efficiency. Vacuum and mop the areas at least 3-4 times per year.

3.  Check your door seals. Place a piece of paper between the door and seal and close the door. If you are able to remove the paper easily, then it is time to replace the rubber gasket around the door’s perimeter.

4. Keep the refrigerator full but not overstuffed. In your freezer, frozen items help keep neighboring items chilled. In the refrigerator, however, overstuffing can make the compressor work overtime. Make sure to toss expired products and leftovers several times per week.
