5 Tips for Making Furniture Choices You Love 09/15/08

1. Don’t be hasty, buying because you “need” to fill a space.

My friend just bought an entry table that she really didn’t like that much because guests were coming, and she couldn’t stand the thought of having an “unfinished” entry. She found something she liked much better a week later….but she’d already blown her budget.

2. Shop in your own home – you may not need to spend any money.

Who says an entry has to have an “entry table”? A chest of drawers, a bookcase, or even a small desk that’s currently in another room could have made a great entry table for my friend, paired with a pretty lamp and nice piece of artwork.

3. Buy to fill specific needs you have.

Think about how you live in and use each room. My friend has kids and dogs…maybe a bench with cubbies would have worked better in her entryway, making good use of the space by allowing her to hide leashes, shoes, and toys.

4. Buy only what you truly love.

If you’re coveting an expensive piece, save up for it…don’t settle for an inexpensive piece with half the appeal. If you’ve got your heart set on an antique, don’t just buy a reproduction because it’s easier to find.

5. Use the furniture you do buy in creative ways.

Another friend spent a small fortune on a gorgeous Chinese bench years ago. She’s never regretted the expense, and the bench has proved its worth time and time again: It’s been an accent piece in her living room, seating at her dining room table, and a resting spot in a stairwell. She’s loved it – and so have I – everywhere she’s used it! Give yourself permission to hold out for the perfect piece…or be creative and make the most of what you already own.
